Question: When robby gordon finished 8th at the daytona 500 why was he so far back in the standings?

For two reasons, only one of which mattered in the long run. first, owner's points start accumulating at daytona, but they don't start meaning anything until the sixth race of the year. for the first five races, what matters is how you finished the last year. if you finish in the top-35 at the end of the year, you start the first five races of the next year no matter what. also, this past year, robbie was initially penalized for having an "unnapproved part " - namely the nose. i can't remember what the penalty was, but it was fairly severe. but he did manage to appeal the decision successfully - one of the few times that has been accomplished. the reason - he switched from ford to dodge just weeks earlier as part of the now "contentious " and "licentious " deal with GEM to buy him out at the end of the year. he got all his new parts and rushed to get everything together and the part number on the nose was off by a number or two - dodge had submitted the newer part, but it hadn't been approved yet. he had no way of knowing, and proved that it was something out of his team's control well enough to get the appeal's committee to rescind the penalty.

Restirictor plate races are a crapshoot, finishing eighth doesn't mean squat, that doesn't mean he has a good car it just means he picked the right draft line and the way things shuffled out.

Because he has no wins, no top 5's and only 2 top 10's. He has not been consistent.
