Posted by: Jay on 2010-02-06, 04:37:08 Open wheel cars are very safe, but the fact that the drivers head is exposed leads to more risk of injury. Last year, F1's Felipe Massa got seriously injured by a part that came off another car and many years ago Christiano Da Matta nearly lost his life after hitting a deer. Stock cars offer much more driver protection. |

Posted by: Tdawg on 2010-02-06, 21:02:35 NASCAR has the advantage of protecting the driver's head, but at the same time, due to their higher center of gravity, being made of steel, and a bigger crash structure (the entire cockpit) they are more likely to roll over. In open wheel racing the cars are designed to use the energy of the wreck to break apart and detach from the cockpit, generally resulting in the cockpit sliding instead of rolling. |
